Thanks for visiting the MidAtlantic Astronomy website!  There are many astronomy clubs, but not all of us have the time to attend business meetings and all that goes in to joining a structured club. Centered in Harford County, Maryland, on December 19, 2006, a small group of astronomy enthusiasts in the MidAtlantic region set up an e-mail reflector (details below) to keep each other aware of upcoming viewing opportunities for astronomical events, to provide help to those just getting started in astronomy and to be able to share our experiences. Most of our group live in northern / central Maryland and southern Pennsylvania, but we have members on both sides of the equator!  Our enthusiasm has continued to build and several of us have become particularly interested in astrophotography.

Many of us are beginners in astronomy, but we have some very experienced and helpful veterans here, too. Whether you are just beginning to learn the constellations, or you are venturing into astrophotography, you are welcome here!

Steve is our resident astrophotography expert.  He took these pictures from his home Sola Virtus Observatory in White Hall, Maryland:

 M-45 "The Pleiades"

 M-31 "Andromeda"

But you don't need a high power telescope to have a lot of fun with astrophotography.  I took these photos with just a camera on a tripod from my home near Bel Air, Maryland:

The Moon

The Constellation Orion

And Kimberly and I snagged this one from our driveway in May, 2008 using our C11 telescope:

M-51 "The Whirlpool Galaxy"

We use the term "club" loosely as there are no dues, leadership or structure, but we really enjoy sharing our enthusiasm for the wonder of the heavens by our e-mail group and getting together to observe whenever we can.  The photographs below were taken as 15 second exposures.  We are not really blurry or invisible!

Please subscribe to our e-mail group!i

We use our e-mail group to share photos, alert each other to current happenings, discuss astronomical topics, coordinate star parties and meet the following objectives:

moon_yellow.gif  Help, support and share the joy of astronomy and astrophotography!

moon_yellow.gif  Alert our group to upcoming events that will be visible from the MidAtlantic region.

moon_yellow.gif  Provide a forum for discussion of the best ways to view and/or take pictures of astronomical events, usage of telescopes, etc.

moon_yellow.gif  To provide a forum to share our experiences of actual observations (sending pictures when possible).

moon_yellow.gif  Distribute pertinent information such as links to video feeds for upcoming launches, links to new astronomical information that may be posted to the web, etc.

We are centered in Harford County Maryland, but anyone in the MidAtlantic region (anywhere really) with an interest in astronomy and these objectives is welcome and encouraged to join!  We only require approval to join our e-mail group to keep out spammers, but  all are welcome!
